Last night we held our first scrapbooking event at the community center. In preparation for the event, we took 3 days and passed out over 100 flyers, sent emails to L’s previous scrapbooking students, wrote Facebook messages, invited contacts from work and our fitness center, talked to lots of people, and explained what scrapbooking is. (This is a completely new idea for the people here.)
We scheduled the event from 6-8pm, but at 6 we only had one person. We weren’t too worried because in this culture no one comes until 6:15-6:20. However, at 6:30 we only had two people. We waited another 5 minutes and 13 more people showed up! My goal was at least 5, but we had a total of 15 come!! We were so excited!

Teaching the art of scrapbooking
The class began with introductions and a small sampling of what scrapbooking entails. Tonight’s plan was to create 3 different cards: Birthday, Thank You, and Best Wishes. The group divided into three tables and we went to work. Each table had a table host who taught and assisted the card making. In the beginning, they needed a lot of assistance, but once everyone figured out what the tools and paper could be used for they were quite more creative than we could have ever imagined. After 30 minute segments, we switched tables so they would rotate through each table to make all three different cards.

As we were making the cards, we had a great time mingling and getting to know one another. One group even realized they all graduated from the same high school and never knew each other! We were able to make some great connections with different people. Several who came asked if they could participate in our other activities at the center and begin to spend time with us!

To close out the evening, L was able to spend some time sharing about how fun it is to create new things and see them transform before your eyes. L was able to tie in the creation of the world as well as her story of hope in her life.

How exciting. Leslie, I know that having a scrapbooking class was your dream from the beginning. I am thrilled that it was a success. I am so proud of you using your talents for Him! Your students had a great teacher!
Looks like a great success! It is so neat to see you guys share your story in so many different ways! Miss you guys but continue to pray for opportunities like this one!
