First Road Trip, Second Round of Shots, and Third Meal

Last Saturday was our first free weekend since we've been here. So, we decided to take a road trip.  Since there is so much history in this part of the US, we thought we should check out some history.  Our first stop was a small colonial town called Williamsburg.  It was a pretty cool town with some old houses.  The people dress up like old colonialists.

Our second stop was the old Jamestown settlement where we were too cheap to pay the $10 to visit an attraction.  So instead we drove a loop around the island and watched some glass blowers.  We also ran into several friends from the campus there.  The weather was perfect; it was a nice day to get away.

This week was also the second (of three) shot clinics.  Last time everyone did great.  This time, however, there were many tears.  Kids and parents alike left the clinic with streams of tears rolling down their faces.  The culprit was mainly the dreaded TB test.  It was a bit startling for the children to see them inject liquid into their forearm.  When it got to me, I said, "That hurts!"  Then fearfully L got up for her shots.  The nurse was about to administer the TB test when she yelled, "NOT NOW!" and took off running.  Apparently the computer system was about to crash, which was a big deal since our company administers more immunization than any other company on the east coast, apart from the military.  I stepped out of the room and jokingly yelled to everyone in the waiting room, "Run for your lives!  It hurts!"  Unfortunately it was a room full of children.  So after causing several kids to cry and getting many mean stares from parents, I ran back into the room.  Even though the computers were down, they continued the shots.  L was terrified by all the commotion and therefore broke down in tears while they gave her 3 shots.  There L sat with tears rolling down her eyes.  But we all survived and now we only have one more left.

This week was also our last cultural meal.  This meal is designed to familiarize us with eating in unique cultures.  It also proves to everyone reading the blog that L did eat rice. She is very thankful to have them all behind her, at least on this side of the ocean.

It was also a very sad day for us as our beloved Mittens passed away.  We will miss her dearly.

Thanks for being so diligent with this blog. It is very appreciated and a great way to keep up with what is happening with you. All the pictures are wonderful.
How great that you are surviving all the shots and cultural food. You are getting so brave.
J--you're going to have to behave yourself and not scare the little kids. Shame on you!!!

We love you and miss you. MOM

Thanks for the blog info. I read it to G'pa and we are really impressed at the training the Company is giving you. And, of course, the way you are both growing and learning so much.

Lots of love and daily remembrances.
