This was a sad week for barnyard animals everywhere. The chicken and the gerbil are no more! The gerbil’s end was sudden and an apparent accident. It was the class mascot for the children’s school. One morning the kids went to feed it, but it was laying motionless at the bottom of the cage. The kids were quick to get help, but there wasn’t anything the doctors (parents) could do. They tried to feed it and almost administered mouth-to-mouth, but it died. They had a visitation, but the body was stolen before it could be properly buried. We suspect the parents might have decided to have a funeral for it and threw it away.
The gerbil’s death might have been due to natural causes, but the chicken was murdered! The story goes like this…
There was once a proud father and mother chicken who gave birth to a beautiful baby egg. The egg grew up and hatched. Out came Samantha. She was the prettiest chick in the chicken coop. Samantha grew up to be a hen. During her life, she had many brothers, sisters, and friends who moved away and never returned. Even Samantha’s mother went on a vacation, but never came back.
It was around that time where a group of people were learning how to survive by preparing their own foods, which means killing, cleaning, and cooking.
That is how our path crossed Samantha’s. She was uncomfortably sleeping in a box with a small hole in it.
Samantha could sense something bad was about to happen. But she could never expected this!
Someone grew up on a farm and was going to show us how to do the horrible act. She promised that the best way was to just yank the head off of the poor bird. So, she stepped on the head and pulled. Poor Samantha had a strong neck and would not let it go. So she just squawked and flapped her beautiful wings. A man quickly grabbed a huge butcher knife and ran over and quickly severed the suffering creature’s neck off. It was horrific and traumatizing!
Yes, it was a botched execution, but the children sure enjoyed it. Then they started to pluck the feathers and that was when we said, “We are now vegetarians.” And we left.
On a lighter note, we met a legend this week. He is a colleague. He probably is the only colleague alive who has building named after him.
Also, we are done with shots!

Poor Samantha! We tried to protect you all those years on the farm! Now you see the cruel world! Actually, its a funny story!
Sounds like quite a week!
Glad the shots are over! And glad the chicken provided interesting "entertainment" for all!
Love and miss you.
I am having my own moment of silence for Samantha! Pretty sure that is not something I could do, let alone watch. I like my chicken to come from the freezer section at Walmart:-) Can't wait to see you guys very soon!!!
I feel bad for Sam...
