Typical fabric store
We have been doing a lot of house repairs over the last month since we moved into a new home. One of the first things we did was buy new curtains for the entire home. How challenging can that be? Well if we were still in America, we would check out a few department stores or websites and then place an order. They would be mailed to our doorstep and then we could install them. It doesn’t exactly work that why here in this country.
First, you have to measure the windows and head to the local market to a fabric shop. The fabric shop is jam packed with bolts of fabric and has no air conditioning. It is a maze to get through the shop and if you are a bigger person you can forget about even trying to get through the so-called aisles. It is quite overwhelming to sort through all the fabrics, especially in the heat of the day.
After you have picked out all your fabric, one of the workers will come cut it all for you. That is, if he can get to it!

After we purchased all the fabric, we took our computer printout curtain examples and fabric to a seamstress here in the city. We explained to the seamstress what we wanted and made sure she could do what we were wanting. Two and half weeks later, all of our curtains were ready for pick up!
Finally, we had to have a handy man come over to hang the new curtain rods because all the walls are concrete. We don’t have a drill to hang them ourselves. It took a couple days for this to happen. After a month of looking, buying, and waiting, we now are finally able to enjoy our new curtains. It is amazing how long it takes to do things here, but we are happy to say it was worth the wait!

Sounds like quite the project... although it reminds me of the FM fabric store here in Springfield... and the process would be very similar :) I am sad you didn't post finished product pictures!!! Love you guys!
I'm so glad it was worth the wait. Imagine how you'd feel if they didn't turn out how you wanted. :) I sure appreciate the stories and all you're doing in Chiang Mai. See you both soon.
wow, it's amazing to see the water run down the streets! Glad you were safe through all this. I imagine it can be a health hazard. Loved the fabric mart shots - one of my favorite things is fabric!! I think it's a little less overwhelming here. So fun to follow you through blog, babysite and your letters. You guys do a great job at keeping in touch, and helping us know how to pray.
