Scrapping with the kids

Last Monday, L was able to teach at an English Camp at the local university near our home.  All the “organizations” in our city came together to facilitate the camp using our own individual talents.  Each person who was willing to teach a workshop could choose the subject of their class.  L chose scrapbooking.  During the workshop, they were also given complete freedom to share as much with them as they desired.  She brought all her supplies from the states hoping to use them in some type of ministry setting here.  She was so excited.  Not knowing if the local people who be interested in this hobby or not, L only taught 1 of the 5 days with the intention of teaching multiple days if it was a hit.  The students signed up for the workshops on Monday morning, so there was no way of knowing how many students to expect until a few hours before the workshop time.  Each workshop was to be limited to 15 students, so L prepared for approx. 15.  As we were on our way to the university, L received a phone call that 28 students had signed up.  We went into panic mode and scrambled to get more supplies ready to go.  Thankfully with the Father’s help, she was ready to go minutes before the workshop began.  At one o’clock the students arrived for the class.  They poured into the classroom, all 35 of them!!  Somehow 28 turned into 35!  It was so crazy.  One of our national partners graciously came to the university to help during the class.  Sun, the national partner, was quite a blessing.

The workshop was great!  L taught them how to make a mini photo album displaying their favorite things.  L was able to center her album around The Father.  At the beginning of the class, L was able to share her testimony and explain why she moved here.  They thought that was interesting.  She then began to explain the project of the day, the mini photo album.  Their faces were so puzzled.  They had no idea what scrapbooking was.  Later, L found out that many of the boys signed up for her class because they thought they would be playing Scrabble!  However, they weren’t disappointed because they were still able to have fun and didn’t have to sit through a serious lecture.  These kids were so creative!  The interesting thing was the boys enjoyed it more than the girls and created some really cool albums.

During the three-hour workshop, no one took a break because they were having so much fun, and during the scheduled break, students from other workshops came in to check things out.  At the end of the day, everyone gathered to show off their albums and smile for a photo.  As the students left, L gave them all a tract of the hope we have or a DVD to take with them.  At the end of the week, L would see them again for a big party held at the community center, Baan Kanoon where the love of the Father would be shared again.

The day was a huge success.  L had more students than any other workshop, which ended up being over 1/3 of all students attending the English camp.  We were able to learn two important things about the people here as well: They loved scrapbooking, and it would be a great outreach project in the future.  Second, they are interested in having fun and being silly.  They aren’t interested in being serious all the time.  Both of these ideas will help us minister to the locals in the future.  Every day we learning something new about reaching the people here.
